Three NYPD officers, a Houston police sergeant, a Colorado police corporal and an Ohio sheriff's deputy were given the country's highest award for bravery by a public safety officer at a White House ceremony.

Six police and law enforcement officers were awarded the Medal of Valor—the country's highest award for bravery by a public safety officer—by President Joe Biden in a White House ceremony Wednesday.

Three NYPD officers, a Houston police sergeant, a Colorado police corporal and an Ohio sheriff's deputy honored at the event, The Associated Press reports. Three FDNY firefighters also received the award.

Here's a look at the law enforcement officers who were honored:

  • NYPD Officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera were ambushed by a gunman during a domestic disturbance call in Harlem in January 2022. The suspect was fatally shot by Officer Sumit Sulan. Rivera died shortly after the shooting, and Mora passed away four days later.
  • Houston Police Sgt. Kendrick Simpo was working security at a mall when he tackled a heavily armed man carrying a rifle and over 100 rounds.
  • Littleton Cpl. Jeffrey Farmer was part of a chase pursuing a suspect who began firing when he reached an apartment door. An officer was struck, and Farmer stopped the shooter long enough to help save the life of his wounded colleague.
  • Clermont County Sheriff's Deputy Bobby Hau Pham pulled a drowning woman to safety after her car plunged into a lake.
